Of the many things I love about Texas, Tex-Mex has got to be near the top of the list. Tex-Mex was originally created to appeal to the palate of Americans and has achieved national popularity. Mr. Mesero’s tagline, “American Standards + Mexican Classics,” perfectly describes this cuisine and the restaurant concept as a whole. It has quickly become one of my favorites when I’m craving the perfect mix of margarita, chips, cheese and more cheese.
Dallas is full of Tex-Mex eateries but there’s something about Mr. Mesero that truly sets it apart. Owner Mico Rodriquez, founder and creator of M Crowd Restaurant Group (think Dallas favorites Mi Cocina and Taco Diner), was the first person we saw when we visited on a beautiful Friday evening. He had taken our reservation via text message, checked us in and remembered to keep us updated as we waited a few minutes for our table. He personally walked us to our table and told us to have a fabulous time. I absolutely love it when owners are this involved in their restaurant. His passion for his business reveals itself in all other parts of the restaurant. The food was incredible, the atmosphere exciting and everything was beautifully cohesive. It was extremely busy, which we assumed would be the case considering it’s No. 24 ranking on D Magazine’s recent “The 100 Best Restaurants in Dallas.”
We sipped on our La Dona margarita while we enjoyed chips and salsa. As we looked over the menu, our waiter, Soco, helped us to select the Dos and Cinco from the Los Combinaciones portion of the menu. Dos comes with a cremaqueso chicken enchilada, tejano enchilada, red rice and your choice of beans. We selected the pintos con queso, because let’s be real, doesn’t refried beans with queso chihuahua sound divine? The moment my fork topped with the cremaqueso chicken enchilada made contact with my mouth, I knew that I had ordered the right thing. You see, I kind of have a thing for sour cream chicken enchiladas and this was the BEST that I have ever tasted. Thank you chef Fino! The Cinco comes with a tex-mex cheese enchilada, a brisket taco, refried beans and red rice. The brisket taco was absolutely incredible and I really wish that we would’ve ordered more of those. It was tender, juicy and full of remarkable flavor.
This isn’t your typical Tex-Mex restaurant, folks. It was classy but not outrageously priced (our platters were only $10.95 each), had modern décor full of bright colors and clean lines and an extremely friendly staff. Give it a try next time you’re looking for a fun night and great food!
