Knox-Henderson Restaurants Get Dishcrawled

My stomach is still satisfied from the first ever Knox-Henderson Dishcrawl event that took place on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. For those of you who don’t know what Dishcrawl is, it’s “a premier culinary social experience […] bringing together neighborhood restaurants, local chefs, regional food producers and fellow food enthusiasts.” In other words, Dishcrawl allows you to try four awesome restaurants in one night with a downright awesome group of people.

The crowd that crawled consisted of the perfect blend of foodies, bloggers and passionate Dallasites. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Shannon from Feed Me Dallas (who wrote an awesome blog post about the event from a foodie’s perspective), Neil Lemons from I Live in Dallas, John Griffing from Dishcrawl DFW, along with many other interesting and fun people.

Since this was the first time I’ve ever Dishcrawled, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The Dishcrawl team is notorious for being secretive about its restaurants, so nobody had any idea where we were going after the first restaurant (although John did drop a few picture hints over social media). I will say that not knowing where we were going was one of my favorite aspects of the night. Fortunately for you, reading below won’t ruin it for you since the Dishcrawl team plans on getting new restaurants for the next Knox-Henderson Dishcrawl.

Stop-OneVelvet Taco

Upon checking in and getting my nametag, I was told that the Velvet Taco was having a Dishcrawl drink special with $2.00 margaritas. After hearing that, I knew it was going to be a great night. Drink in hand, I made my way outside to the patio where 30 other people were waiting to try the first dish of the night. Josh Garcia, general manager at Velvet Taco with a great personality, gave us the background of Velvet Taco, future expansion plans (which are huge) and described all of the food the group was about to indulge in. The unique food was remarkable: rotisserie corn (my favorite), rotisserie chicken tacos and grilled flank steak tacos.

Stop-TwoFireside Pies

The group, many with unfinished margaritas still in hand, then crawled down Henderson until we reached our next location: Fireside Pies. With great weather outside, we took over the patio that opens to Henderson Ave. Everyone devoured the three different pizzas placed in front of them: the “Triple ‘Roni” (my favorite by far), “Hot and Crumbled” and “Light n’ Crispy.” Everyone listened in on a brief history behind Fireside Pies and it was easy to see why they have had so much expansion success.

Stop-ThreeVictor Tangos

The crawlers then walked across and up the street to Victor Tangos, a popular Henderson Ave mixology bar that serves upscale gastropub food. Victor Tangos brought out a spread of food that definitely didn’t disappoint: spicy salmon nachos, duck bacon flatbread, chicken wing over rich grits and ended the food show with roasted marrow bones filled with brisket. Although I wasn’t one of them, many crawlers indulged in one of Victor Tango’s ultra-popular drinks (the passionfruit gimlet looked spectacular). At the end of our Victor Tangos experience, we were told that for our last stop, we’d be crossing the bridge between Knox and Henderson to head over to the Knox St side (which is a shockingly short walk).

Stop-FourWild About Harry’s

There is something about Wild About Harry’s on Knox St that makes me nostalgic every time I walk in. It may be because I’ve been getting ice cream there since I was a mere lad, or it simply could be that I’m always over the moon to get my hands on some of their delicious ice cream. We had the opportunity to listen to the daughter of “the” Harry and one of the best parts of the night was seeing how passionate she was about her father’s ice cream shop that’s been open since the 1960s. All the Dishcrawlers got to try a medley of different flavors including vanilla, chocolate, coffee (try this even if you don’t like coffee) and mint chocolate chip. Toppings were included as well, although with ice cream that good, I didn’t even touch them.

If you missed the first Knox-Henderson Dishcrawl event, make sure you buy tickets to the next event in August:
